Following the success of this year’s Glorious Ryukyu performance comes the Australian debut of Tale of the Southern Winds — a stunning dance theatre work by all-female Okinawa Song & Dance Theatre Ensemble, ‘Chura’. The islands of Okinawa, formerly known as the kingdom of Ryukyu, are nestled in the sub-tropical blue seas of Southern Japan. This lyrical and powerful performance captures the essence of life in the islands of Okinawa: the cultural richness, colourful history, distinctive sound and breathtaking natural beauty. With two shows only in Australia, don’t miss this opportunity to be transported away to an idyllic island paradise.

About Okinawa (Ryukyu)

Also known as Japan’s secret paradise, Okinawa is the name given to a group of over 160 islands which dot the subtropical seas of Japan’s southwest. Until the 19th century, when Okinawa became part of Japan, the islands were an independent state known as the Kingdom of Ryukyu. Flourishing trade relations with neighbouring regions in Asia – particularly China and Japan – led Ryukyu to become a melting-pot of cultural influences which infused the Kingdom’s own rich culture. Now one of Japan’s 47 prefectures, Okinawa is known in Japan for the distinctive cultural legacy of its Ryukyu days—embodied in its music, lively festivals and dance—as well as its stunning natural environment.
