ウラン採掘拡張に抗議集会10月20日(木)

10月10日、South AustraliaにあるOlympic Damと呼ばれる、
銅とウランの採掘場拡大が、環境大臣によって承認されました。

主な理由は・・

* 仕事やお金を増やす
13,000 jobs and contribute over $45 billion to the economy
in South Australia and nationally over the next 30 years

* 環境への長期的な影響も考慮している
The company must contribute to biodiversity conservation
priorities, landscape scale linkages, the protection and recovery
of threatened species, and programs for environmental research.

一箇所でのウラン埋蔵量では、
世界で最も大きいと言われる、Olympic Dam mining・・は、

規模的に世界一大きい採掘会社 BHP Billiton・・の事業で、

現在、その拡張について具体的な話合いが行われています。


そこで、ACE Collective が指揮をとり、BHP Billiton の
HQ(ヘッドクオーター)前にて、20日、デモ集会が行われます。


こちら側の理由は・・

* 採掘口が広く、露出部分が大きい
The mine is to be one of the largest open cut mines
in the world, 1km deep, 4.5km wide & 3km long.

* 淡水化プラントと更なる水脈への影響
The planned desalination plant threatens the Giant Australian
Cuttlefish while water extraction from the Great Artesian Basin
has adversely affected the precious Mound Springs of SA.

* 放射性廃石の処理問題
The production of radioactive tailings will increase seven-fold to
68 million tonnes annually, with inadequate tailings management
plans to be dumped over a 44km squared area next to the mine site.

Dear all,

Some of you may be already aware the environmental approval for the Olympic Dam expansion has been approved. Last Monday Federal environmental minister Tony Burke approved BHP Billiton's supplementary Environmental impact statement.

The BHP Billiton board are now deciding on the final decision.

Reasons why the expansion should not go ahead

The mine is to be one of the largest open cut mines in the world
1km deep, 4.5km wide & 3km long.

The planned desalination plant threatens the Giant Australian Cuttlefish while water extraction from the Great Artesian Basin has adversely affected the precious Mound Springs of SA.

The production of radioactive tailings will increase seven-fold to 68 million tonnes annually, with inadequate tailings management plans to be dumped over a 44km squared area next to the mine site.

Export of 1.6 million tonnes of copper-uranium concentration to China each year.

A National day of action has been called for this Thursday the 20th of October in response to the recent environmental approval on Oct 10th.

The Melbourne protest will be held at the BHP Billiton HQ, this day will also coincide with BHP's London AGM.
